Sounds like a double standard there.
Here’s the problem with your thinking: the ideological bent of justices shouldn’t matter. Or at least it should be of minimal importance.
Why? Because the constitution says what it says and means what it means. Liberals go too far in looking for ‘hidden meanings’ or appealing to extra-constitutional things like ‘well, in this country they do this’ or whatever.
So, as a response and a reaction to that, conservatives try and appoint strict constitutionalists to the court in order to keep the liberal justices in check.
Roe v Wade was a textbook example of conjuring rights. After it passed ‘the abortion question’ became a litmus test for any nominee. SCOTUS has been made into a kind of ‘third legislative branch’—by the left.
So it’s hardly surprising that they want to expand it. In fact, it’s totally predictable.
