I agree. Felons losing their gun rights automatically and permanently has created a huge--HUGE--number of cases where a felon has been sent to prison for double digit time simply by the presence of a firearm in some situation. They could be a another person's home and a firearm is present. That's sufficient to get them charged with felon in possession of a firearm should something occur with law enforcement, however minor.
Same thing with being in a vehicle they don't own and are not driving.

It's insane. You can KILL someone by reckless driving and the state will not permanently take your right to drive a car. But commit some minor non-violent felony that did not even get you any prison time and you lose your gun rights forever.

No, but they're all felons. I don't like the courts deciding that one class of felon is better than another.

The way I see it is you pay your debt to society and then you get your rights back and I don't care whether or not someone is violent.

I can understand a violent felon (who uses a gun in the commission of a crime) losing his gun rights, but a non-violent felon should get all his/her constitutional rights restored after completing their sentences and probation. I've seen where some have received 8 years probation AFTER completing their sentences/parole. Once finished (without having any arrests during probation), all constitutional rights should be restored.

And yet people with DUI (some resulted in vehicular manslaughter), can get their licences back.
