Default Repeal The 17th Amendment? Yes Please

I've been saying for years that the direct popular election of US Senators is a mistake. Ben Sasse gets it.

The 17th Amendment is the single biggest mistake this country ever made because it in one stroke changed the way out government works.
Don't be afraid to see what you see

I agree. Second worst amendment ever ratified, after the 18th.

Absolutely! The 17th Amendment turned the Senate into another House. The original intent of the Senate was to give states a voice in the federal government. The House gave the people a voice, and the President represented the nation. With the 17th Amendment states get kicked to the curb in favor of more mob rule.
If instead, the Senate were apportioned as pre-17th Amendment right now the Senate would be predominately Republican rather than a slender majority and the House being Democrat would have to work with the Senate on that basis. But because the Senate has a slender majority and enforces a phony filibuster rule, nothing gets done.
That isn't to say eliminating the filibuster rule and letting the 17th Amendment stand is a fix, because it isn't. That just turns the Senate into a second version of the House and makes the whole point of having two houses in Congress moot and irrelevant.

I'd say it's the 14th. Amendment that needs changed. NO more anchor babies...

I get what you're sayin' but I don't think the 14th is an issue if the 17th doesn't exist.

I'd say it would still be a problem. The 14th. has outlived it's usefulness. It gave slaves and other immigrants citizenship along with their children.
When written, there was no welfare, therefore, no reason for illegals to come here to have their litters and collect our gov't benefits. Today they do.

To Chaz: The XVI Amendment is the worst amendment by far because it pays for everything that is destroying this country. In addition, The U.S. would never have become the greatest country the world ever saw before a tax on income was IMPLEMENTED —— NEVER RATIFIED.

Note that the XVII Amendment was also implemented but never ratified.

Few Americans realize that all of the worst lies combined do not exceed the biggest lie told about the XVI and the XVII Amendments —— THEY WERE NEVER RATIFIED. THEY WERE IMPLEMENTED AND ENFORCED.

The basic test of freedom is perhaps less in what we are free to do than in what we are free not to do. It is the freedom to refrain, withdraw and abstain which makes a totalitarian regime impossible. Eric Hoffer
