A review of this year’s debates shows they were less concerned than Trump about the pandemic.
‘Donald Trump is not responsible for COVID-19, but he is responsible for our slow, uncoordinated response,” Joe Biden tweeted Friday. “Experts say that if we had acted two weeks earlier, more lives could have been saved. Trump failed to take swift action—and we’re paying the price.”
The Trump-acted-too-late story line would be more convincing if Mr. Biden and other Democrats had called for bolder action early in the crisis, but they didn’t. Democratic candidates held five televised debates, lasting nearly 11 hours from Jan. 14 through March 15. They offered no policy proposals that haven’t already been enacted and said little about the virus in the four events in January and February.
There was plenty of talk of impeachment but no mention of the coronavirus at the Jan. 14 debate in Iowa. During the next debate, in New Hampshire on Feb. 7—a week after Mr. Trump restricted travel from China—Bernie Sanders and Amy Klobuchar mentioned China, but only in the context of climate change. Pete Buttigieg said: “The next president is going to face challenges from global health security, like what we’re seeing coming out of China,” but he didn’t frame this as an immediate danger.
The virus didn’t come up at all at the Feb. 19 debate in Nevada, though Mike Bloomberg warned that the Chinese “are going to die just as our people are going to die” as a result of carbon emissions.

The Trump virus has killed almost 200,000 during the term of Trump. Trump made it clear he knew about it and how dangerous it is. He did nothing. People died. Others got very sick and are damaged. That panic thing is ridiculous and should fool nobody. There was plenty of panic because when you are not told how bad it is, you think it is a lot worse. We have the internet. People did get the message. Online, the message is scarier. Trump accomplished nothing but got American citizens blood on his tiny hands.
