Default UN Chief; ‘Famine of biblical proportions’ looms over humanity due to Covid-19

‘Famine of biblical proportions’ looms over humanity due to Covid-19, UN food chief warns

The Covid-19 pandemic may lead to a calamity of epic scale, with millions facing starvation worldwide, the head of the UN’s hunger-fighting body has warned.
“All the data we have, including WFP forecast that the number of people experiencing malnutrition will grow by 80 percent by the end of the year, … points to a real disaster,” David Beasley, Executive Director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), said.

....and then there are the locust swarms.

Maybe the gods of war will be placated if we send a sacrificial monkey to Mars.

Why would COVID 19 cause mass starvation? The means of agricultural production are unaffected. The means of distribution are likewise intact. Now, on the other hand, the forced shutdown of economies at the retail end of things might cause many to not have the means to purchase food, but that's a function / failure of government policy that can easily be rectified by lifting restrictions on economic transactions and operations. That is, reopen the economy.

The article explains nothing. It gives two examples towards the end of it, both special exceptions that don't explain a "worldwide famine." Those are Lebanon where an industrial accident (the port explosion) destroyed much of the country's stored grain supply, and Yemen where there is an on-going civil war. It closes with a line for bureaucrats begging for money... how usual.

The WFP doesn't need billions. If what they are predicting is even slightly true, those billions should be going to buy food for the needy not fund UN bureaucrats.

I agree. The article that moon keeps citing does not say why the pandemic would stop people growing food - especially in Latin America, apparently.

    Maybe moon could explain?

I did. I’m willing to entertain the notion that the coronavirus may have stopped people growing food. I just want to know why. The article doesn’t say.

I found this in a CNN report:
“The new, coronavirus-related factors affecting each region were myriad. "Lockdowns and economic recession are expected to lead to a major loss of income among the working poor," Beasley said. "Overseas remittances will also drop sharply.”

COVID and climate changes are affecting food on a national level but it's still possible to return to the land in a communal or solo sense. Now the locust problem isn't easily solved. It would require ways of keeping them out. The plagued don't have greenhouse or hydroponic solutions though.

So what else is new? All of that and more is coming! We've known that for ages.
Abortion rights dogma can obscure human reason & harden the human heart so much that the same person who feels
empathy for animal suffering can lack compassion for unborn children who experience lethal violence and excruciating
    pain in abortion.

Unborn animals are protected in their nesting places, humans are not. To abort something is to end something
which has begun. To abort life is to end it.
