I’m on the left, I have no problem with Christians, the majority of the people I know profess to be Christian, I love them and have absolutely no problem with their religion as long as they respect the line between church and state and do not expect me to practice their religion.

That's really when things go downhill with Christianity when it's used as an iron fist by those in power. Many kings and queens through the ages pushed the religion and used it to commit atrocities. In America, our founders made stopping such things a top priority. We had a good run but we did exactly what they said should never be done. Reagan is when the movement to do these things spearheaded. Now a doctrine of love and compassion is politicized and being used to divide.
