The point of course is it is cheaper. It helps people. It helps the cops. Many rape victims say the second worse thing that happened to them was dealing with the cops after the rape. Problem is, these kind of ‘low intensity’ [for lack of a better word] interactions with cops don’t contribute much to bad outcome statistics. What were the social workers going to do with Michael Brown?
Someone committing a crime isn’t going to pay attention to a social worker lol. In fact, an unarmed social worker is liable to get hurt if they confront the criminal.
No one denies there’s a role social workers can play in certain instances—it’s just that those types of instances aren’t the problem.
