Wayne was a draft dodger in WW2. He claimed his shoulder injury kept him from serving. At that time, he was a stunt man.

Exactly. FDR MAY have been THE most racist president the US has had, AND Byrd was at one time, a member of the KKK.

None of that is true. Wayne received a deferment and was classified III-A by the draft board. The deferment was for age and having dependents. Wayne at the time was 34 and had four children. The draft age group at that time was 21 to 45 and the US military was only taking those 21 to 34 at the time. After Pearl Harbor the registration age was shifted to 20 to 45 and every male 18 to 64 was to register. Wayne's age put him at the borderline for acceptance and with children to support he was deferred.

That isn't all that uncommon. During WW 2, the US military deferred or rejected approximately 1 in 3 men drafted for various reasons. In some parts of the country the rate of rejection was a high as 1 in 2. At the time Wayne was working for Republic Studios and was one of their leading stars and money makers. Republic's management was in large part responsible for getting Wayne some of his deferments as they wanted to keep him there making movies that were highly profitable.

Later in the war, Wayne's status changed to II-A and he was deferred as critical to the war effort in employment. In between, Wayne made several USO tours to the Pacific and Southwest Pacific theaters and was recruited by the OSS as a civilian to make intelligence reports on things like troop morale.

It is often said he later regretted not going into the military at some point in the war. But, draft dodger he never was.
