We should not assume that this very important vessel was lost to Navy Negligence....Starting this fire is absolutely something that The New Chinese Empire would do, having taken notice of how easy it was for one person to destroy the USS Miami. If so the Chinese might not have been running the operation, it could have been either Russia or Iran.

The Navy is a complete disaster area....in my estimation the worst of the branches....we are so screwed.

This almost certainly is related to the Navy knowing for well over a decade that they dont have enough repair capacity, the problem never getting solved, and trying to gerry rig something to get by.

Navy and Washington failure to perform has no cost us a boat that we could not afford to lose.
Sad to hear. Thanks for the post.

I will say this... After having to be the new guy in Shop 10A (Ship's Superintendent's office) at SIMA San Diego in the "Amphib" section, and getting stuck with the USS Barbour County after an engine room fire that gutted one main space, I pity the smuck that gets stuck with the "book" for the repairs on the BHR.

The chances that this thing will be repaired are approx zero. Metal cant take this much abuse and be trusted. Then too there is all that water inside the hull already, with more coming.

The press conference follows a terrible night for the ship, which saw the fire expand to its bridge and greater island superstructure, partially melting its upper forward portion. The ship now lists at the pier as firefighting efforts continue at a frantic pace from both the air and the ground.

Yes. You have to dewater while fire fighting on a ship. Take out what you are putting in.

    They are doing that:
There is a list that they are trying to correct via dewatering as part of a larger balancing act of keeping the ship stable while also fighting the fire

Yesterday I was assuming that this was contractor negligence, and certainly there was negligence....But hearing today that the fire control system was mostly or completely non op....that this thing started where flammables were allowed to accumulate, and that there was no welding done in the area I have rapidly moved towards suspecting sabotage...this looks like the USS Miami all over again.

I find it very interesting all the claims that this fire is burning at 1000F given the reports of melting metals. Surely it has to be burning quite a lot hotter.....right?

Steel melts around 2500 Deg F. It starts to weaken at around 800 Deg F though.
