I saw a report that sailors had just started moving back onboard, and that there was thus likely at the time a transition in fire control responsibility. Plus this happened early on a Sunday when there were likely few people awake and roaming the boat. If I were planning sabotage I think I would have picked this as the perfect time.

It does seem unlikely that one mistake by a maintenance worker could burn down the whole ship.

We'll have to wonder until the investigators give us more info.

I would assume the ships have smoke alarms in vulnerable areas.

If this was Sabotage from a foreign power would our government admit it? That would be so embarrassing....maybe they pretend to not be able to figure out what happened.

China would of course take that as a display of weakness.

SAN DIEGO — Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday said Friday he is unsure if the Bonhomme Richard should be repaired after it was engulfed in flames and smoke in San Diego over five days this week.
Gilday, speaking during a press conference on Naval Base San Diego across from the damaged and listing ship, said they’re are still assessing damage so it’s unclear if the ship will be repaired.

“The damage is extensive,” he said, adding but he is “100 percent confident” the defense industry can put the amphibious assault ship back out to see.

“The question is should we make that investment into a 22-year-old ship,” he said.

Only 8 years left on the Hull, it would likely take three or four years to repair if it can be repaired, and the repair yards are already hopelessly overloaded with work....That adds up to Hell No we will not repair it.

Apparently the fire burned too hot and for too long, the metal was either melted or cant be trusted, there is nothing they can do.

On the plus side the Navy has said that they will refocus on better procedures to keep their ships from burning.

    That would be nice.

    Pretty much what we expected.

The decision came faster than a lot of people expected but that is because there is nothing to think about, the decision is obvious. It does bring to mind how in the weeks after we were hearing from Navy leadership something to the effect "We have every intention of returning BR to service, and are optimistic that we can".

I said at the time "What?"......this is about my vendetta with FantasyLand Creatures and liars.

Everybody in the Navy has firefighter training, this is a danger they know well. This idea that they just let ships catch fire constantly and burn to the surface of the water is absurd.
Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.

Instead of totally scrapping this ship, they could make it into a garbage scow and start cleaning up the great Pacific garbage patch?!!

Got a name for it too?!! USS Donald J Trump

The vessel was in the process of being switched from contractor authority to ship command authority, a process that was very poorly done which is of course all the Navy's fault. THis was the perfect time to set a fire, which to me means that it was very likely set. I also note that while the Navy constantly praises first responders it was actually very chaotic and poorly done.
