It's shameful. This is a basic precaution during a pandemic where the contagion is spread through respiratory droplets. We will never be able to calculate how many lives have been lost because so many on the right made it something that it is not - but it is surely more than a few 9/11's. It's embarrassing, and horrible.
It is one of Trump's most profound failures as a leader.

Prior to 2020 when it was apolitical.
It was conclusive: surgical masks are useless in a clinical setting. It didn’t even matter if they were worn in surgery or not [the even reviewed the surgical literature] and that surprised even me. Now they tell me, when I’m effectively retired.
If, somehow, you can convince me anything but N95’s are useless in a clinical setting; but somehow, become useful when worn haphazardly by the public, then we might get somewhere.
Coup has started. First of many steps. Impeachment will follow ultimately~WB attorney Mark Zaid, January 2017
