Almost every day in the last two weeks, Mr. Trump has sought to stoke white fear and resentment, portraying himself as a protector of an old order that polls show much of America believes perpetuates entrenched racism and wants to move beyond.

I think COVID is playing into Trump's calculation here.

There is zero doubt that he wants this to be a base election. Since his base is shrinking, he needs as little turnout as possible.

My fear is that Dems will stay away from the long lines & crowds on election day, because they understand the virus. Trump's supporters are much more ignorant about it, and will be much more likely to turn out and vote.
