We were overdue for a serious global pandemic. The last really big one had been the Spanish flu of 1918.
Aids hasn't been a picnic, but we were due for a really big one that imperils everybody.
We've been getting them at least since the Great Plague of 1387 which wiped out a third of the world's population..
That was was HUGE, but a pretty big one comes about every hundred years or so.

And now that it's come, we, the only developed nation in the world without national socialized medicine,
are getting hit the hardest by far. At that point, the United States stopped being a relevant nation in global importance.
