How is NY today?

It's a paragon of how the virus should have been handled everywhere. Despite getting hit the worst at the start (biggest city, most traveled), they brought it under control and are now one of the best states in terms of containing spread AND re-opening.

As for herd immunity, that may be a myth. They don't know at this point how long immunity lasts, and it may not be that long. Until they figure that out, that strategy is fool's gold.

The bigger point is that once they learned, they were outstanding about applying what they learned, and the results since then speak for themselves. The rest of the nation should do exactly what NY did - which was follow the CDC guidelines to the letter.
