    My oldest grandson starts K this year, too. I’m preparing myself to be the teacher. Not much is good about this pandemic.

    I have a 2nd grader & one grandkid starting K in the fall....... Her awesome mom/my daughter is doing many, many things including soccer coach, teacher & student going for her masters in Engineering.. Kids not in school puts much more burden on her.

    She would love the schools to open, W/ a huge But..... But for the virus......

    We were doing great here for 3 months, then after the opening it went bad & they closed up again........

    That's so true. Not sure how this is going to work out for them if they do school remotely this fall. My daughter will have to do her same lesson plans, videos, and prepare work packets (plus grade all that), AND help Lily with HER school work, AND keep Lily from pestering Dad who is working remotely as well. It was stressful enough this past spring. I wished they lived closer so we could help out more. And what about all the other parents who have to go to work during the school day? How are *their* children going to be taught if they don't have in-person school?

    I hope it doesn't come to a place where we just don't have school for an entire year. The kids will fall so far behind. And the parents will be at their wits' ends trying to figure out how *they* can work and have their kids home at the same time.

    Congrats to your daughter... she sounds like one smart cookie, with a very full plate!

    Thank you, she is a pretty awesome parent IMHO.... She plays soccer & involved in some of the local youth clubs..

    Yes, in a pandemic there are not many good choices. In some places in Calif there were no cases & no deaths (Modac county is not on the list-nothing to report) there are no impediments to opening in many of them but NYC?? Kids on a subway to school etc??

    The self-appointed czar & self-proclaimed expert wants all-regardless. While he left the states to their own devises to get health equipment & make the call for reopening etc, he wants to play putin & threaten 50,000 school districts to open or else......

    I hope some call his bluff... See if he is willing to cut off American children's education to forward his political ambitions....

    I have to wonder, cutting off funding to schools that aren't gonna open??? lol How much funding are they gonna need from da evil gubment??

    My daughter estimates for her district, about 8% of their funding comes from federal sources. She posted this earlier today. Much to think about.

    ~~~
    Your children’s teachers:
    Will be facing classrooms full of some children who are ready to move on with a typical curriculum and others whose parents checked out during lockdown and helped their kids do absolutely nothing academic.
    This alone would be difficult.
    Add into this mix.
    Heated political and scientific (and pseudo scientific) opinions from parents about mask use.
    Accusations that teachers are socialist/liberal if they take basic precautions.
    Kids with sensory disorders who can’t leave the masks alone.
    Kids with asthma who struggle with basic air intake without a mask.
    Kids with immune issues who need everyone to wear a mask.
    The kid who will show up wearing a lacy bra cup as a mask, creating chaos for an entire day.
    The kid who has learned to shoot spit wads with his mask.
    Kids intentionally breathing on other kids.
    Kids faking coughs.
    Needing to remember which desks to wipe down between classes.
    Reworking all lesson plans in light of social distancing.
    Attempting to regulate social distancing in crowded hallways.
    Grief, fear, and loneliness in students who aren’t sure how to process losses of life in their families, fear for compromised family members, and trauma from months spent alone.
    Kids who work out the tension they feel from BLM protests, viral and economic stress, and general unease by acting out.
    Many teachers will have to teach while wearing masks in classrooms where even 100% bare faced leadership would be difficult.
    They will potentially be exposed to the virus daily. And many teachers are at risk, for one reason or another.
    Normal seasons of flu. Strep. Bronchitis. Sinus infections will send fear into the room.
    Little children will long for hugs. Will want to embrace one another on the playground.
    Teenagers will throw their arms about each other.
    Teachers will see how these kids need the contact. They will feel torn while trying to decide whether to intervene or not.
    There will be countless meetings. SO MANY MEETINGS.
    On top of normal crisis training, experts will require teachers to think through dozens of new scenarios.
    Meetings before school. Meetings after school. Parent meetings. Administrative meetings.
    Teachers will know things that could cause panic, and they will be asked by their authorities to keep quiet about those things.
    And they won’t know what to do.
    They will consider their parents. Their grandparents. Their children.
    Meanwhile, they are going to feel the need to teach, inspire, prepare your children—just as they always have.
    And in this pursuit, they will need to be prepared every single day for an immediate switch back to online learning.
    I truly cannot imagine teaching in this environment. The men and women who are willing to attempt this deserve our deepest respect. Theirs is such sacred, difficult work.
    We need to be praying for these heroes.
    They’re going to need it.
    WOW, very overwhelming when you lay it all out there.
    I know a few that are going to retire if they have to go back, but they are there already, ready to retire..
    For the younger ones though it is very difficult & some are going decide for a career change, unfortunately...
    And the obvious lack of that has shown itself time and time again over the last twenty years or so.
