I talked for a couple hours with an older real estate investor. We were waiting at the airport and had some time to burn, so we talked politics. He was telling me that he doesn't rent to blacks, which surprised me. I pointed out that it isn't right to discriminate based on race like that, but he said it wasn't even about race! I love talking politics and racism, so I was enjoying the weird conversation. He said that it was the government who made whites and blacks natural enemies, since they gave blacks legal advantages over whites. This guy said he does not care what race a person is, but that it does not make good business sense to rent to tenants who have legal advantages in the event of a legal dispute.

Sounds like he just doesn't want to rent to Blacks because he doesn't want to bust up white neighborhoods. Which is fine, it's just not acceptable to say so.

Why would anybody care if a white neighborhood is busted up? Aren't rental properties just a business?

A lot of people prefer to live in racially homogeneous neighborhoods. Nothing wrong with that.
Yes, it is a business, but some of these renters respect the wishes of the people currently living in these neighborhoods, especially when the renters themselves have lived there and became friends with their neighbors.
The explanation your guy gave just sounds very flimsy. It's much more likely that he doesn't want to bust up white neighborhoods. This is a common feeling, but very taboo, so I can understand why he wouldn't want to admit it.

The issue here isn't race. It's about poverty. Black people don't have "legal advantages." Rather, many low-income tenants have Section 8 housing, which gives those tenants, regardless of race, "legal advantages" against landlords. It's most likely that the landlord in the OP (assuming he's even real) is conflating "black tenants" and Section 8 tenants.

I ran a rental management company for 27 years.......I have rented out thousands of apartments.......in my experience there is a race of people who gave us a disproportionate share of trouble.....white people......
