Because Hollywood often portrays historical events in culture. When those events are badly portrayed, or complete fiction posing as historical setting, then Hollywood is doing a disservice to culture.

You totally missed my point. You seem to believe that a more primitive culture deserves the dustbins of history, while an allegedly "superior" culture that like that which produced a genocidal brute like Columbus should have its "heroes" recognized. The people who wrote the Bible were just as primitive as the indigenous people of the Americas.

I dare you to advocate erasing them in favor of the far more modern followers of Islam. After all -- THEY created algebra and were outstanding astronomers. The names we use for stars today are from their language, as is the very word "algebra."
No, I didn't. It is you that misses the point. Starting with the last first. The Arabs and Dar al Islam did not invent algebra. They added some new and unique concepts to ones developed by the Greeks, Indians, and even the Babylonians. Almost all ancient cultures practiced astronomy to one degree or another.

Now, to the point with the Native American peoples. Question what great advances in culture, the arts, science, or anything else did they make? What impact have they had on the advancement of mankind in general? Well, the answer is close to nothing. That doesn't mean they should be written out of history, but it does mean they should be placed in history according to their significance and that means in a broad general history they warrant little more than a mention here and there.

Question, you state that "they--Native Americans--) should have their heroes recognized. Well, name a few. Can you show their significance to history in general? Columbus isn't famous so much because he "discovered" the Americas. Others had done it before him. What made him famous was he was the first to tell the rest of the world, and that was a lasting and major event of great significance.

Keep changing the names. It doesn't change the meaning.

See post 27, the one that Joanie is pretending to ignore! As regards the Americas, it was Amerigo Vespucci that first realised that South America was distinct from North America and wasn't just part of Asia.

I'm not sure why I'm bothering. You have your mind already made up and encased on concrete. So I'll consider this something to enlighten those who still have a window open. lol

One example: The Haudensaunee (Iroquois) Confederation. Its great leaders, Hiawatha and Deganawidah the Peacemaker, are actual historical figures. (Hiawatha is not the same individual as he was depicted in the Longfellow poem, where he more closely resembles Nanaboozhoo, an Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) mythological god-human figure.)

The Great Peace was fomented by Hiawatha and the Peacemaker, and bound the warring nations into the League. Each individual nation kept its own customs, leaders, and law yet, like the States which were to come centuries later, they became a cohesive unit. Their governing codes were closely studied by several of the Founding Fathers of the United States, including Benjamin Franklin. Our own system of representational government is based upon the Confederation's system. It is a myth that these early people had no written constitution. The Great Peace is codified in a massive wampum (shells of purple and white) woven belt. The entire belt represents the whole of the league, Each shell represents part of the whole. The keepers of the belt memorized word for word each article of the agreement, using the belt as memory device.

lets see. Columbus Ohio just cancelled Columbus, and America is a racist construct -cancel that too.
which leaves just "Ohio"..a truly frightening thought

    Yale University?

Any renaming push on the Ivy campus should start at the top—with Elihu Yale, slave trader extraordinaire.
