That's right.....and then the course of History will rule on which one of us understood reality the more correctly....thats the ruling I care about.

I have spent my life making sure I win that one.

    And I will.

What are you doing to prepare for the Apocalypse? Is your bunker built? Food and water supplies stocked? ....or are you just hiding out in a log cabin in the mountains?

A fine example of the ego resisting thinking and learning, which is how you got yourself in this position of having no understanding of what is going on in the first place.

I happen to think all self identity is in our heads. Where else could it be? If you are a Muslim, you're a Muslim in your head. If you are a Christian or an Atheist or a Liberal or a Conservative or a Sportsball fan, where else are you such a thing but in your head?

So it doesn't shock me that some people identify as a woman/man or a cat or British in their heads.

Consider religion. They can't all be right, so at least some, if not most, religious people hold some beliefs that we could justifiably call delusional, or not corresponding to reality. But we don't send people to insane asylums or have them take medications or seek therapy. We have a gentleman's agreement to respect that set of delusions and allow people to live them out in relative peace.

So it isn't quite as simple as saying, 'yes, but these people's self identity is delusional'. We accept some delusions. And perhaps we are all delusional about some aspects of our self identity. I am probably not as smart, funny or good looking as I think i am.

So maybe it is more a matter of what delusions do we accommodate and what should our criteria be for which delusions deserve reasonable accommodation - the kind we afford religious delusions, political delusions, delusions of ego/grandeur etc.

And that's before addressing the arbitrary nature of social norms we have set up around gender. Maybe if we didn't enforce such strong, arbitrary norms, we wouldn't have people who don't fit those norms identifying as other genders.

Well, presently young women athletes—at their expense, are having to entertain their delusions and how far do we go with accommodating their imaginative pronouns? Some of these people insist on being called a certain thing and get triggered if you use the wrong word.

Maybe some degree of arbitrary norms are necessary. Or we can go the full Mad Hatters Tea Party route.

I already piped in on my opinion on the athletics issue. That deals with sexual dimorphism, not gender. Plenty of trans folk dislike this campaign also, and the sports associations that have caved on this have their heads up their asses. But I suspect if and when it hits their pocketbook, they'll reconsider. It will kill women's sports if you have to be born with a penis to win them. Maybe it's all a conspiracy run by enemies of Title 9, and the destruction of women's sport is the goal.

The few I know only get annoyed when people deliberately and repeatedly 'misgender' them. They don't GAF about honest mistakes or forgetfulness or whatever. I don't think it costs anything to make an attempt. You'd perhaps be annoyed if someone deliberately got your name wrong all the time? If so, wouldn't you be 'insisting people call you a certain thing'? But most of us make some effort to remember the names of the people we interact with. People change their names for other reasons (marriage, etc) and we make the effort to learn their new name. I just don't see why calling people what they want to be called is so onerous an accommodation.

I don't know that arbitrary norms are the opposite of full mad hatter, and when I see the general quality of discourse online, it feels like the tea party started long ago. Of course one can go with a slippery slope argument, and I certainly understand the inclination. I saw a boy who self identified as a cat manipulating his parents with screaming threats of suicide because they didn't want to buy him a magazine, while wearing ears and a tail (a look that only works on Japanese schoolgirls) in public, and it just about broke my liberal sensibilities right there. At the very least, that boy is setting himself up for a hard life. If it were my kid, I'd have taken away his phone/internet for a year, but I watched these poor parents trying to be good liberals and having no tools for dealing with the little shit. And trans folk, when they choose to live out their identities in public, are setting themselves up for some difficulties as well.

I think a lot of this anti-trans rhetoric comes across as a lack of compassion. They become the enemy that must be defeated and dehumanized rather than a group that have some tough mental challenges. Their suicide rates are quite high compared to the average, they pay a pretty high social price for trying to live out their identities and so on. It's easy to abstract them if you've never met one or really listened to their stories. Personally, I think living with gender dysphoria would suck pretty bad.

My trans friend... I knew her as a he for 12 years before she told me. It was a tough switch for me to make. And I didn't understand why she never told me, since she was one of my closest friends. But it isn't an abstraction for me. The vibe I get that a substantial slice of America wouldn't mind if the trans folk did all commit suicide rather than (gasp) be extended the simple courtesy of calling them what they want, comes across seriously messed up to me.

I thought they had a staggeringly high suicide rate.

And I've seen them flip back and forth between male and female personas, ... depending on which gender is most advantageous in the moment. Which is what it's really all about, ... co opting gender for power and privilege.
