They wouldn't expect him to. Like the subjects of monarchies, they want their kings and queens to be above them. They want to look up at them on their pedestals, rather than see them as equals. Notice how they kept insisting that they're the "real Americans", like they were trying to convince themselves?

Real Americans want leaders who come from the people, not reign by edict of God.
