Let me put it this way. I was stationed overseas and the president was coming (I won't say which one). One of the guys hated him and casually remarked someone should shoot the SOB. Within a day guys with plastic ID cards showed up and questioned him for about 4 hours. The Secret service and FBI take this shit seriously.

You miss the whole point. The Secret Service takes their job of protecting the president seriously. Any possible threat no matter how remote will be looked at.
