Default Sweden admits mistakes in COVID approach

Man Behind Sweden’s Controversial Virus Strategy Admits Mistakes

-- At 43 deaths per 100,000, Sweden’s mortality rate is among the highest globally --

Sweden’s top epidemiologist has admitted his strategy to fight Covid-19 resulted in too many deaths, after persuading his country to avoid a strict lockdown.

“If we were to encounter the same illness with the same knowledge that we have today, I think our response would land somewhere in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done,” Anders Tegnell said in an interview with Swedish Radio.

Tegnell is the brains behind Sweden’s controversial approach to fighting the virus, and the government of Stefan Lofven has deferred to the epidemiologist in its official response to the pandemic. Gatherings of more than 50 people continue to be banned, but throughout the crisis Swedes have been able to visit restaurants, go shopping, attend gyms and send children under 16 to school.

The laxer approach to containing the virus has drawn both praise and condemnation from across the globe. What is beyond debate, however, is the effect the strategy has had on the country’s death toll.

At 43 deaths per 100,000, Sweden’s mortality rate is among the highest globally and far exceeds that of neighboring Denmark and Norway, which imposed much tougher lockdowns at the onset of the pandemic.

I just made a thread about that as well. Sorry!

NYT COVID updates are reporting spikes in states that were previously leveled off. They are states that relaxed social distancing measures too soon.

    No worries!

We know Trump's response to the pandemic is a disaster, and Sweden's approach does not appear to be the way to go.

Maybe when we have a president willing to learn and reflect, we can try to emulate South Korea's approach.

Yes. Biden is looking far more presidential than #BunkerBitch w/o even trying.

Trump followed experts advice, and did the shutdown, unlike Sweden...The testing problems were the CDC.

Trump's people are in charge of CDC.

This may come as a shock to you, but the leader of America's executive branch (aka, Trump) is responsible for the performance of the Executive Branch agencies, bureaus, and commissions.

Trump totally fucked it up. He thought it will magically go away and acted that way. In Jan. we had zero cases but knew Corona was coming. So Trump held rallies, played golf and assured us all that it was being controlled. We had none of the testing . We were short on safety gear, even masks. Trump ignored it. It is June and we still do not have the needed testing. We went from Zero in January to having 1/3rd of all the cases on the planet. How rightys can delude themselves into thinking he did a good job is mind-boggling. The shutdowns we're done in spite of Trump, not because of him. Over 100,000 Americans died. You cannot make that a success no matter how badly you want to.

Did the protests all end today and that's why we're back to caring about COVID?

Mostly the states did the shutting down. What did #COVID45 do -- half an hour of social distancing, yelling at the (D) governors to open back up, refusing to wear a mask even in crowded areas, calling the virus a "Democrat hoax," and simultaneously praising and blaming China?

Interesting. So you can say we need to shelter-in-place, wear masks and practice social distancing unless thousands upon thousands of people are protesting shoulder to shoulder and not wearing masks and then science says it's ok?
