    Default Abolition of the Police

Anyone familiar with this movement? I just read an article posted about what white people can do to support black people. In it it included both defunding of police departments as well as the abolition of the police. I did a google search and the movement has been written about a bit. My initial thought is people don't want the police gone they just don't want them to break the law and mistreat people. But the abolition movement argues police have been corrupt from day one and there's nothing we can do to change that other than disband them.

I can't imagine this movement will ultimately gain much headway. But it's an idea that's out there.

It's kind of futile. All that abolition of the police would accomplish is the mass hiring of private security. It's kind of like what already happens in Latin America. A lot of people in various Latin American countries hire private security, since violence is high and kidnapping is common (if you have money).

So, you'd just replace a state version of security with a lot of private security.

I think a better idea is to get rid of police unions. Unionization of police is a lot of what enables police corruption and brutality. Offenders are able to hide behind union power to escape accountability. Get rid of the unions (and grand juries), and most of the problem is solved.

    Abolition of the police?

Train them better, get a commitment to constitutional civil liberties, and pay them twice as much.

I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed more. There have been attempted police reforms across the country that the police unions have fought against and either stopped or strongly neutered.

Most things are political and for those on the left unions are their allies and thus they can't really come out and attack them, even if they are the hold up for much desired change.
