The reason they had joined the National Guard was to avoid being drafted and going to Vietnam. Meanwhile, Schroeder was getting an education to try to be an officer in Vietnam. He was learning Vietnamese to better serve his country. He told his friends that even if he did not agree with the war, he had been given so much by his country that he thought he owed it to his country to serve, and serve well.

Then a bunch of draft dodging right wingers shot him as he walked between classes.
