To my knowledge, the national anthem is sung as unity for us as Americans. We could change that in the future by never singing the national anthem, or no one stand, or we all turn our back to the flag or we all kneel for various forms of injustice. That's always an option but would that maintain its effectiveness in the long run?
I don't know why it's played at sports events anyway. It's not played at movies, concerts, dances, operas or lectures. And it *really* ticks me off when people use it as a patriotism test.

My understanding is we sang the national anthem during baseball games, maybe just the World Series, during WWI. And it was a show of patriotism. It was done periodically following and then done again during WWII. I have zero problem with that.

If they don't play it anymore I wouldn't lose sleep but I like it because it's something that should unite us all as Americans and with so much division I like things that can potentially unite us. Of course, like most things the anthem is a divider now.

I went to a Warriors game earlier this year and a 70 year old white lady was sitting a few rows in front of me in a $1K/ticket seat. She stood up and turned her back to the court during the national anthem. I found some irony in that but at the end of the day its her choice and life goes on.

I didn’t say that. Please don’t put words in my mouth. Obviously racism is a major problem but you haven’t been paying attention if you don’t realize that the militarization of our police is also a major problem and one that exacerbates the racism problem.

So spare me the illogical false dichotomy. It’s not just possible but probable that both racism and militarization are a problem in our police forces. They are not mutually exclusive.

You mentioned your father’s story. About 20 years ago I had a cop slam my head into the ground, gave me a black eye and ended up having an ambulance take me to the hospital. I didn’t do sh*t. Cops can be a*holes

Patriotism these days means wearing a mask. You wanna do something for your country you wear a mask. You observe social distancing. You take this seriously and you join the battle. That's more patriotic than flying flags or playing songs.
