One of the big unanswered questions is how much of a role surfaces play in contagion. The droplets containing the virus will land on surfaces (including the gloves and masks you speak of), and linger there. In theory, that is one vector of infection. How big a one is unknown.
It is dangerous for the workers to have to clean up the infected gloves and masks. How dangerous? No one knows.
