Since the equator runs through Brazil, it is also summer in Brazil.

The reality is that Brazil is located almost exclusively in the tropics. Winter in much of Brazil is like winter in Cairo or Mexico City.

Yeh so what? The Tropic of Capricorn goes through Rio and the country is nearly three thousand miles long from north to south. The equator goes through the extreme north of the country, most of the population is in Sao Paolo and Rio. Don't tell me about the tropics pal, I live in the fucking tropics, I am at 13.7 degrees latitude whereas Rio is at -23.5 degrees! The current temperatures there are in the teens or low 20s at most during the day with low humidity, it can get bloody cold at night in June and July.

We'll see indeed, anyway now you've had a vivid demonstration of what the likes of AOC and her pals want all the time. So it may have opened people's eyes somewhat.

Well you prob have not noticed but I have never talked about her (that I recall) or the other gang of four or whatever they are called......... Not quoted them or even begrudgingly given them much cred or complaint.....

IMHO they are insignificant freshman & not yet to be taken seriously.........

Frankly, I can't remember anyone here pushing or rooting up their agenda.

She just been made co-chair of the Dem's climate committee, obviously to appease the eco-loonys but they could easily decide party policy.

Now she is the real deal and she pretty much agrees with him.
It’s impossible to know, but I would love to the outcome had we done...nothing.

Gupta is almost certainly right that COVID ‘plows through’ vulnerable populations and that it’s most severe outbreaks occur where vulnerability gets coupled with high population density.

Can you say NYC and nursing homes? And the maddening thing is THEY KNEW THIS in March. The data all but shouted it. But they hit the Panic Button over a spurious set a models.

I agree with Gupta about tracking deaths instead of case numbers but I would add hospitalizations to it. This was all about protecting hospitals and not preventing COVID deaths, right?

The first objective is actually achievable—the second one is a reality we need to accept.

I agree with her[?] again that opening up will result in nothing *significant* happening: it’s why I opened the ‘Open State Catastrophe’ thread. I was careful how I worded the title because rising case numbers don’t represent a catastrophe. Team Panic members keep telling us ‘just wait two weeks’.

Well, it’s already been more than two weeks. It basically comes down to how much *faith* [yes, it’s the operative word] one has in mitigation: if social distancing and lockdowns are some sort of panacea that can turn 2.1 million deaths into 100,000 deaths [depending on how they are recorded], then hang on, we’re in for a rough ride when states open back up.

Conversely, if mitigation only had a marginal effect on the spread of the virus, then nothing *significant* will change when states open back up. And this would be particularly true in states or regions with relatively low population densities [can you say 50-60% of counties in the whole damn country?] where whatever the effects of mitigation are—they are going to be muted by the sheer nature of the region.

I’m very confident this is going to be looked back on as an epic, fear driven, cluster F*.

What 10.1 for an all time record low? That's your argument? That 10.1 is bloody cold? Ever been to Canada?
The average temperatures for Regina and Saskatoon in June, July and August which is the height of summer are lower than the June, July and August temperature for Rio during winter.

The current weather in Rio is warmer than the northern US so any argument that winter temperatures in Rio are allowing the virus to spread is complete hogwash.

There are three factors heat, UV and humidity, so seriously just shut the fuck up you're spouting pure bullshit!!

Look matey, if you're so scared then stay the fuck inside and stop bothering those who want to get back to normal. I suggest that you inject yourself with bleach and arsenic they are sure to kill the virus!

Just looked at the weather forecast for Sao Paolo and there is a yellow alert for frost with a 3c minimum, does that sound tropical to you? If they had a frost here the locals would think it was the end of the world. You only get frosts in the mountains over 1000 metres in northern Thailand!

Oh and I am done arguing with pedantic wankers, kindly fuck off there's a good chap!

Anti-social distancing is probably the most effective method of preventing cross contamination. Already I see folks just plain slacking off with their masks as almost no one knows anybody that's been infected, much less died.
Three weeks ago I saw far more folks wearing masks in the grocery store, at least half. Today - maybe 10 - 15 %.
I think the public is now realizing lockdown and masks was an overreaction. NYC is a different story. That area including cross river New Jersey is the most densely populated area on earth along with all the international trade that goes on there.
