Based on the nature of the drug itself I don't see that happening, but it would definitely be a good thing if it does work. By itself it doesn't appear to be particularly effective; there are anecdotal reports though that purport to show it somewhat effective if combined with azithromycin. Obviously that antibiotic does not work against viruses but may help with the bacterial pneumonia that seems to be common with a COVID infection. I won't be trying that treatment as I'm allergic to the macrolide ABTs.

Fauci has been dismissive of it as a therapy. Every time some reporter asks him- he waves off the various treatment combos as "anecdotal" THAT IS INCORRECT - the results are FACTUAL if not clinically proven .

By doing so he did not advocate for its use like Trump did.In fact he threw cold water on the entire protocol.
Fortunately th French and Chinese early results got out and other physicians saw the results and followed Trump's reasoning of "what have you go to lose?"

That's what I meant by he was speaking as an epidemiologist, and not a practicing MD providing therapy.

He did a disservice to front line doctors -who at least for the most part didn't listen to him;

I agree. OTOH it's entirely possible that patients are begging their prescribers for it based on what they've heard. Physicians will occasionally prescribe off-label if there is enough evidence to show that efficacy outweighs harm, but in general they do not. One example of this is the drug bupropion (Wellbutrin) that was originally used for treatment of anxiety and/or depression. It was found that it also helped patients quit smoking. Physicians prescribed it off-label for that purpose, and eventually it was approved for smoking cessation too.

So we will see about the hydrochloroquine and what becomes of it as a standard treatment for coronavirus.
