Default "UNPROVEN DRUG TREATMENT HYPED BY TRUMP is a QUACK CURE," FOX biologist to Perino

Quackery. Lazarus effect is bullshit. Maybe FOX will fire him. Some people JUST WON'T play ball.

"It's sad to me that people are promoting that drug. We know already from studies at best it will have a very mild effect

William Haseltine (Fox News)Top biologist to Fox News host Dana Perino: Unproven drug treatment hyped by Trump is a "quack cure"

Trump and Fox hosts have touted a drug called hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19, even though its efficacy is unproven

    APRIL 7, 2020 9:23PM (UTC)

Dr. William Haseltine, a biologist renowned for his work in confronting the HIV/AIDS epidemic, fighting anthrax and advancing our knowledge of the human genome, told Fox News on Monday that an unproven drug treatment for the new coronavirus hyped by President Donald Trump was a "quack cure."

"It's sad to me that people are promoting that drug. We know already from studies at best it will have a very mild effect — at very best," Haseltine told Fox News host Dana Perino about hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug that Trump has repeatedly promoted against the advice given by Dr. Anthony Fauci.

After reviewing how previous studies show the drug to either have no effect or only a "very mild" one, Haseltine said "the thing that makes me sad about that story is some people may take it who are on other medications or have other underlying conditions and may have very serious — even life threatening — consequences. It is not something to take unless a doctor prescribes it."

Perino then asked Haseltine about "stories of people saying that they've had this Lazarus effect by using this drug," an apparent reference to a claim made by her Fox News colleague Laura Ingraham.

Haseltine replied, "That is nonsense — complete and utter nonsense. And, in any situation, there are always going to be people who promote one kind of quack cure or another, and there are Lazarus effects. In every epidemic I've ever looked at, it's always the case."

"HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine." He later added that he hoped the two drugs would be "put in use IMMEDIATELY. PEOPLE ARE DYING, MOVE FAST, and GOD BLESS EVERYONE!"
    ^ Trump Tweet.
nobody said hydroxychloroquine by itself is a treatment for new cases.

But even taken by itself it may slow down replication if taken early enough.

What is the problem is Fauci and the Dems keep repeating it's simply "anecdotal" -it's not.

It's being used worldwide (combination). There is another case study that says adding zinc to the duo
opens up cell membrane and allows the zinc to bind to the RNA -destroying it

however even taking hydroxychloroquine is very safe - long term lupus user for ex are not monitored for cardiac events (etc).. and it has had some success as a prophylaxis.

As Trump has said "what do you have to lose?"and he is correct as usual

how about you do some research outside your narrow mind?
The "duo" (or tri)is prescribed world wide /the case studies are numerous ( not clinical trial -but case studies)
Fauci is an epidemiologist, and talks like one -but he is willfully ignorant on the clinical uses

The FDA has warnings that azithromycin “can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm.”

So instead, Alam replaced azithromycin with another decades-old antibiotic that doesn’t pose any known risks to the heart.

“Doxycycline is an anti-inflammatory with properties similar to azithromycin but without the safety concerns and without cardiac toxicity,” he said.

“So I decided why not choose that?” added Alam, a board-certified internist, who shared the results of an observational report consisting of 47 patients he treated.

”With the [limited]resources we have at the nursing home, we took a deep breath and realized we need to do something,” Alam said.

Alam is not the only one to begin using doxycycline in the fight against COVID-19.

Henry Ford Health System has started using combinations of the three drugs because of apparently fewer side effects, published reports state.

Alam began treating his patients, 45 of whom had tested positive for the coronavirus after they developed a high fever, shortness of breath and cough.

He received permission from their families before starting them on the medications, which have not yet undergone randomized controlled trials.

“The majority had clinical improvement,” said Alam. “We had very good outcomes.”

Alam said that 38 of 47 patients treated returned to their baseline and their symptoms resolved. Seven of the patients were transferred to a hospital and two died.

There was no control group in the study so Alam acknowledged more studies are needed to evaluate his protocol’s effectiveness.

numerous US hospitals are using hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 patients after it was approved by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). And there are good reasons to do so.

Medications that neither cure nor prevent a disease can still treat its symptoms. With hydroxychloroquine, the most likely benefit comes from the drug’s ability to tamp down inflammation.

This is how it’s used to treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other auto-immune disease symptoms. In these disorders, an over-active immune system gets so ramped up that it can’t stop creating killer cells to fight foreign invaders. That barrage of killer cells, meant to destroy disease-causing organisms, instead turns against the body itself, damaging such systems as skin, cartilage, and vital organs.

A misfiring, hyper-active immune system appears to be behind some of the worst coronavirus respiratory symptoms, too.
The lungs become disastrously inflamed as the body attempts to expel the virus. If the inflammation becomes pronounced enough, it’s the immune response itself, rather than the virus, that can land someone on a ventilator in the ICU, and sometimes result in death.

This means that, for those with or at risk of severe COVID-19 lung complications, hydroxychloroquine might be a good, potentially lifesaving treatment. It might reduce inflammation enough so that fewer people need ventilators, and those who do need them might have a better chance of survival. But, the emphasis is on the word “might.” As with everything being tried against COVID-19, doctors are practicing what amounts to battlefield medicine. People are dying daily and others are at imminent risk of death. There’s no time to await results from the large, blinded clinical trials that inform medicine in ordinary times.

How has it worked, to date? With only a few small studies to guide treatment, or even identify those who might most benefit, hospitals have reported mixed results. Even when COVID-19 patients recover, it’s difficult to know whether they would have done so without the medication.
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/anitaba.../#1ab40b43675b

One of the most dramatic press reports of apparent success came from a skilled nursing facility for veterans in Lebanon, Oregon. A doctor treated eight elderly veterans with a combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin (an antibiotic that’s been used in tandem with the anti-malarial, and in a French study, showed better results than hydroxychloroquine alone). One died, but the others recovered, including a 103-year old who was “seriously declining” prior to getting the medication, and survived to celebrate his 104th birthday on April 1, 2020.

Although there has been much hand-wringing about politicians and certain media touting an “unproven drug” like hydroxychloroquine, it cannot be stressed enough: There are no proven treatments for COVID-19.

No one should take prescription medicine advice from a politician, a media pundit, or anyone but a medical professional. Neither should anyone make blanket statements entirely rejecting medications that medical professionals are using, simply because a politician engaged in hyperbole about its effects.

Unless there exists medical verification, not narratives from individuals, it is anecdotal

And what you are missing is that no one is against usage of the drug, or the drug itself, as Trump has portrayed it, rather the manner in which Trump, who is the leader Americans are suppose to get facts from in a time of crisis, is out there praising the drug as the answer, offering unfounded false hope

As I noted earlier, if Trump really felt the drug was what he said it was he wouldn't have felt the need to add the disclaimer, "but what do I know, I am not a docter," says it all

Doctors are successfully using Hydroxychloroquine to treat coronavirus patients in the U.S., Dr. William Grace says

With death toll from the deadly coronavirus surpassing 13, 054 worldwide, doctors and hospitals are on the race to provide immediate relief and treatment for coronavirus patients while the search for vaccine continues. The good news is that there’s been some hope around antimalaria drugs like chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine that had held promise as a potential treatment for the coronavirus.

As we reported early this week, a small trial by French researchers found highly positive results from hydroxychloroquine combined with azithromycin — “75% patients turned #coronavirus negative after 600mg hydroxychloroquine treatment for 6 days vs only 10% in control group.

Several trials in different countries, including the United States, have had 100% success. Below is a video of Dr. William Grace saying doctors are already using Hydroxychloroquine to to treat COVID-19 patients here in the United States. Dr. Grace said the drugs have shown successful results.

Dr. Grace is not alone in talking about chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, a New Jersey medical worker is convinced chloroquine indeed saved his life. The story about the New Jersey medical worker was first reported in NY Post.

As for chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine study in France, the results showed that all six patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin tested negative for the virus after six days. Of the 20 treated with just hydroxychloroquine, 57.1% tested negative for the coronavirus after six days. Just 12.5% of the control group made up of 16 other patients tested negative. “Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin,” the study said.”
