Coronavirus deniers take aim at hospitals as pandemic grows

Two videos illustrate the stark disparity in how the coronavirus outbreak is being portrayed on different parts of the internet.

The grim realities of hospitals overflowing with patients seeking treatment for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, are not always as visible from the outside, leaving space for bad actors and coronavirus denialists to push dangerous disinformation — and put themselves in harm's way.

The video, taken by former Fox News commentator Todd Starnes,jump-started a conspiracy theory that resulted in a trending hashtag and millions of video views —all of which pushed the idea that the pandemic has been overblown by public health organizations and the media.

Starnes' tweet — viewed 1.3 million times — was one of the first and most popular examples of the wider conspiracy theory that spread on social media over the weekend centered on the #FilmYourHospital hashtag, which called for people to go to hospitals and capture what was happening.

Starnes did not initially respond to requests for comment from NBC News. But after this story was published, Starnes said in an email that he has taken the coronavirus outbreak very seriously and not disputed its spread. He said the intention of his video was to “push back against the media narrative that NYC had been turned into some sort of dystopian society.”

NBC News found more than a dozen videos pushing the #FilmYourHospital conspiracy. The videos were mostly recorded outside hospitals in New York City, a region shouldering the brunt of the U.S. outbreak, with more than 66,000 cases and more than 1,200 deaths. A few videos came from other states, including New Jersey, California and Ohio. Shared by far-right conservatives and conspiracy accounts across Twitter, YouTube and Facebook, the videos collectively had been viewed millions of times as of Monday.

The #FilmYourHospital hashtag had been tweeted by more than 5,000 accounts by Monday afternoon, although some people were critical of the conspiracy theory.

DeAnna Lorraine, a recently defeated California Republican congressional candidate, was among the first to use the hashtag
outside Torrance Memorial Medical Center, a hospital in Los Angeles County.

Lorraine's tweet ranked as the most popular in the hashtag, garnering 760,000 views, 18,000 retweets and 28,000 likes.
Fox News contributor Sara Carter helped propel the video to her 1 million followers. "Interesting, for sure...I'll be watching #FilmYourHospital closely," she tweeted, adding follow-up questions about whether Lorraine had called the hospital, which Lorraine did not answer.

Lorraine and Carter did not respond to requests for comment. Carter deleted her tweet Monday afternoon after it had been retweeted 6,200 times.

The situation inside hospitals in some of the hardest-hit areas of the U.S. has been thoroughly covered by many media outlets, including NBC News.
Dr. Irwin Redlener, director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, where he is a clinical professor of health policy and management and pediatrics, said privacy laws and respect for patients' privacy inside hospitals prevent the release of some of the harrowing images from inside....

MANY CLINICS, surgical centers, outpatient centers, imaging centers are CUTTING STAFF or the skilled are moving over to CRITICAL CARE wherever, whenever possible. Elective, 'routine' PROCEDURES, TESTS, IMAGERY are being deferred.

Many/most of those are affiliated with local hospitals! For the criminally STUPID among us, that is a stream of REVENUE LOST! All those reimbursements, copays, out of pocket revenues that keep hospitals running are going to dry up.

Let's see in the next 12-18 how many hospitals, clinics, surgical centers and others have to close up because this BROKE them.
