At the start of March, thousands of people gathered for a meeting held by one of the world’s largest Muslim groups. Attendees hitched rides, took trains, boarded buses, and caught flights, crossing borders and passing through international airports, arriving in thousands.

Now, authorities fear that many thousands of people may have been exposed to the Chinese virus as a result.

At least 647 attendees have shown symptoms of COVID-19, the Chinese disease caused by the novel coronavirus, while six people have already died.

Making matters worse was an audio clip that emerged last week, shared on WhatsApp and broadcast on some news channels, in which the voice of a man called on Muslims to reject social distancing and continue to gather at mosques.

“They say that the infection will spread if you gather at a mosque, this is false,” the voice on the recording says. “If you die by coming to the mosque, then this is the best place to die.”

Mosques were allowed to remain open on Friday, when Muslims gather for weekly prayers, even as the coronavirus pandemic spread and much of the country had shut down.

Religious leaders still urge the faithful to defy restrictions and gather at mosques.

Police allowed three to five people to enter Twin Cities mosques for congregations but many others were turned away. But at smaller mosques, congregations were observed with social distancing guidelines ignored.
