WOOD RIVER — As the area attempts to navigate challenges and changes brought about by the coronavirus, established practices, rules and procedures are requiring another look.

A recent YouTube video showed two young African-American men with surgical masks being followed by a Wood River Police officer as they left Walmart in Wood River. Viewers were at odds whether the men were racially profiled or causing a disturbance — as well as if anyone should be asked to remove a surgical mask in light of COVID-19 concerns.

The video, which first aired March 18, has more than 30,000 views. Jermon Best, of Belleville, who made the video, said he shared it because he wanted to show the world racial profiling is happening and the situation could have been much worse.

When I moved to NC the near lack of racism was refreshing. I could sense the attitude change immediately.

On my first trip here for a job interview I stopped at a Convenience store-McDonalds restaurant. Never seen a combo like that up north. I parked far from the building as I normally do and walking towards the restaurant noticed a brand new Saleen Mustang convertible, top down, with an advertising sign for a local dealership in the back seat. How cool is that I thought, now three businesses working the same site. I stopped at the drivers side to admire the car, then looked up and a black guy, dressed business casual just like me, was doing the same thing at the passenger side. I looked at him and he looked at me and smiled. I said "why don't we hot-wire this thing and take it for a spin?" He joked back "you and me man."

That type of exchange would never had happened where I grew up. If I had said that to a black guy he would have given me an entirely different response, probably accuse me of racism.

I was at the bank today and all the tellers wore masks. And the door was locked , sign said limit 2 customers, ring bell to get in. My teller complained about her mask the whole time, lol.
