They’d pretty much have to force me to wear a mask in public. The biggest threat from the virus is from contact [door handles etc] and airborne droplets. It’s actually takes a considerable number of the viruses to get in your system to start an infection.

You’re not going to get it out cutting weeds or from being outside or even around other people if you’re ‘out of sneeze range’.
You do realize that people wear masks while mowing due to seasonal allergies? It's pretty common.
Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

I used this joke on my bank. I had a check Friday that was too large to deposit by phone so I had to do it in person.
Wearing my mask, I told the teller I never thought things would be so bad I'd have to wear a mask to a bank.
    Only got a slight chuckle.

Funny though, he didn't ask to see my face. Prob would have if I were making a withdrawal.
I'm being forced to use their plastic bags, can't use our own for the time being. Also the first time I had to queue up outside.

Yes, touching contaminated objects can cause an infection, but the reason for the masks is to minimize spreading the virus. Someone alone in their own yard is not going to catch the virus. A bank teller with the virus reportedly can give it to someone just by breathing near them, but the money would also be contaminated.

Masks are NOT mandatory. You should only wear one if you think you are infected. That has always been the case. It's not a new or revolutionary idea.
The cdc changed their recommendation and now recommend it in general in public. You can be contagious before you think you have it bed wetter.

They're a small local chain, and don't have a drive thru option.

The face mask prevents you from aerosolizing the virus and launching droplets when you sneeze, preventing it from spreading to others by breathing in people or objects. Only an N95 mask, which has filtration, will prevent you from breathing in the actually particles yourself but that's only hospital workers and maybe public employees need them. Because their the ones most at risk of breathing in a large enough number of aerosolized particles for infection directly from the air without necessitating touch as an intermediary.
