When this thing came down I went through my collection of dust masks and found two N95 masks, along with about 50 lesser grade particulate masks. I gave the new one to my wife and the used one, in my "crawl space bag" I washed. She is in the medical field serving the elderly so is required to wear one. Her company ordered $10,000 worth from China, $4 each, and they are still waiting for them.

Two facts about these masks:
1. Most N95 masks have a check valve that allows you to exhale through it. Therefore it only protects you, not those around you. (The mask I gave my wife does not have this valve; mine does.)
2. The masks can be sterilized by placing in an oven. As I recall it is 170F for ten minutes. Along with showering immediately when she gets home my wife also sterilizes her mask in this manner.

At any rate, the idea behind a simple mask is to catch airborne droplets. Viruses could drive their little tractor trailers through the gaping holes in most fabrics.

You’re talking nanometers in size. A dust particle is huge compared to a virus. But again, it’s a numbers game and it takes a certain amount of them to pose a threat for infection.

While it may not afford the personal protection of an N95, it could keep an infected person from spreading it as easily.
