Shortly after giving his daily coronavirus briefing Wednesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom appeared on CNN with Jake Tapper.
Not only did Newsom refuse to take Tapper’s bait; he praised Trump’s responsiveness to the state’s needs.Tapper told Newsom that he’d talked to “officials throughout the country…who temper their remarks and what they say about the federal government response for fear that President Trump will punish the citizens of their state if he considers them to be a complainer,” then asked if Newsom finds himself “by necessity, tempering any issues” he has with the federal government’s response
I’ve been consistent – and Jake, you know this. We’ve been dealing with historic wildfires and droughts…here in California, and I’ve always said this. I said it a year ago. This is not a time to bicker….
When it comes to times of crisis, we need to raise above the partisanship. And I’ve extend always an open hand, not a closed fist, in these circumstances, and this is is no different.
But let me just be candid with you. I’d be lying to you to say that he hasn’t been responsive to our needs. He has. So as sort of an offer of objectivity, I have to acknowledge that publicly. And the fact is, every time I called the President he’s quickly gotten on the line. When we asked to get support for that Mercy ship in Southern California, he was able to direct that in real time. We got 2,000 of these field medical sites that are up, almost all operational now, in the state because of his support.
And those are the facts. We always want more. I could criticize this or that. At the end of the day we’re just trying to focus on developing a relationship of trust as a matter of course, because there’s just too many Americans, 40 million that live in this state, that deserve us to get together and get along.
Anyone who regularly follows California politics will acknowledge the difference in Newsom’s demeanor during his press conferences and appearances during this crisis. There’s a massive burden on his shoulders, and it’s apparent that he deeply feels that responsibility and takes it seriously.

Interesting.
This makes the local news a lot. Not surprisingly Newsom has spoken out quite a bit against Trump during his time as Governor. However during the fires a couple of years ago and now Newsom has held his fire. The reality is we (California) are reliant on the federal government for resources so it doesn't benefit Newsom or the state for Newsom to anger Trump right now. So in that sense Newsom is smart. He has his eye on the Presidency in 2024 and he knows he will be judged by how he performs right now. Pissing off Trump is not to his benefit.

That's exactly what I mean. From his perspective he's trying to do as good as job as possible because it will be front and center on his resume for his Presidential run. So therefore it is to his benefit to work with Trump during this time. And we all know Trump at this point, you say nice things about him and he's far more likely to work with you.
Newsom like Xi, Putin and Kim, has learned that flattery will get you anything with Trump.
Willie Brown addressed this in his weekly column today:
Why is Gavin Newsom making nice with Trump? He’s got a good reason
From the East Coast to California, the coronavirus crisis has put a new spotlight on America’s governors.
President Trump’s briefings are drawing lots of viewers, but so are the ones held by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has taken more than a few swipes at the president.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also upped her wattage at Trump, in what could amount to an audition for Joe Biden as he looks for a woman to run as his vice presidential candidate.
On the other hand, Gov. Gavin Newsom has been outright effusive toward Trump and his help for California.
The other day when a reporter asked him why he appeared to be cozying up to Trump, Newsom said partisanship has no place in this crisis and that we ought to be focusing on the health and economic problems affecting just about everyone.
Newsom then spent five minutes laying out a list of all the things the feds have done for the state.
For now, federal help is paramount, so this is a smart strategy.
Those who spend time criticizing Trump are thinking about their national exposure, while Newsom is following Tip O’Neill’s adage that all politics — and in this case relief — is local.
And for Newsom, California is local.
