Default COVID-19 could be especially bad news for the South

This article points out some major issues with poor states in the South when seeking to fight COVID-19.

Obviously Trump will let the states handle it themselves until the situation becomes desperate.

    https://www.popsci.com/story/health/...s-health-care/
...“Before any of this coronavirus came along, we were facing significant challenges in the health care area,” said Crawford, who is 72 and now lives in Jackson. Today, with the relentless advance of the disease known as COVID-19, Crawford worries about his state’s vulnerability—especially given that the population is generally older, poorer, less insured, and stricken with higher rates of chronic disease than urban hubs. Mississippi, which has the lowest life expectancy in the country, is one of 14 states that have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act....

....While no corner of the country is likely to be untouched by COVID-19, some experts worry that the virus might leave a deadlier wake once it gathers strength in southern states. Early numbers are still low in the Deep South: Mississippi has about 250 cases and one death. Alabama has around 200 cases and no documented fatalities. Louisiana numbers are higher, at more than 1,000 infections and more than 30 deaths—though most so far are in and around New Orleans. But the mortality of coronavirus infection rises when patients have underlying health concerns.

One study in Wuhan, China, found that more than half the deaths occurred among those who had conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Another study in Italy reported that upwards of 99 percent of deaths were among people with prior medical conditions. In the US, data already suggest that rural counties, especially those in the South, bear the highest death rates from lower respiratory infections.

Absolutely CORRECT. Poor, many without social media access except LIMITED phone plans. Rural areas void of medical help. Those without insurance who will be turned away because of NO insurance. Those just toooo scared of all of it will die.

CYNICAL, you bet--this is the PERFECT storm to rid the SOUTH of many of it's "undesirables". "Live eaters" as one REP stated a few days ago. And what about the BROWN/BLACK ones? So many DEMOCRATS off the rolls. (Someone right NOW is running those #'s. Bet your ass)

Now how many BROWN 'illegals' will NOT come for testing under any circumstances with threat of deportation? Right back into the shadows, taking their VIRUS with them. Does anyone think they won't come in contact with others in all communities? What happens when they or their kids get desperate? Right to the hospitals!

    Hello Dutch Uncle,

This premise appears to be spot-on:

Huntsville coronavirus drive-thru test site closes for test shortages

So the prez goes on TV and announcees we are getting serious, ramping up testing.

    Great!

So they promptly open up all these testing sites.

    Hooray!

Only problem is they still do not have enough test kits, so the sites are either highly restrictive of who can use them ( most are turned away,) or they have to close because they flat ran thru their test kits within hours.

    Pathetic.

A game changer': FDA authorizes Abbott Labs' portable, 5-minute coronavirus test the size of a toaster
Grace Hauck, USA TODAY 14 hrs ago

CHICAGO – A five-minute, point-of-care coronavirus test could be coming to urgent care clinics next week, and experts say it could be "game-changing."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued Emergency Use Authorization to Illinois-based medical device maker Abbott Labs on Friday for a coronavirus test that delivers positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results in 13 minutes, the company said.

The company expects the tests to be available next week and expects to ramp up manufacturing to deliver 50,000 tests per day.”

Let's hope that's true and that the company is able to provide accurate testing.

It's true and there are several other companies producing the kits.

Agreed. The good news is that the US has great resources and I expect great results on both testing and treatment methods over the next few months.

Sorry I wasn't more clear: what I meant was that I hope it's true both that this test kit is "game-changing" and that the company is able to deliver in a timely manner as they stated.

Indeed. PoliTalker was cheering the economic loss to millions of Americans and their families ("go, go,go") caused by the Chinese virus.

He will surely be disappointed with the availability of hundreds of thousands of small test kits to save lives.
