My State has a college savings plan. I put money in it for both children for many years. The gains are tax free but the money had to be used for education. While the rules for what is considered "education" aren't lax, they do provide a degree of flexibility. It doesn't mean tuition and room/board only although that's how most use it. It can be used to buy computers, etc. as long as the primary purpose for it is educational. My oldest, while not receiving a full ride, got approximately 90% of her school funded by scholarships. The amount in her account exceeded what we had to pay on her behalf. When the oldest graduated, I was easily able to transfer the money to the account for the youngest. Same situation with costs vs. available funds applies for her. The only time the money is taxable is if it's taken as a distribution for things unrelated to education. My oldest has mentioned getting a graduate degree. The money can easily be transferred back to her account to pay for it.

Something else that's a benefit is that any money put into the account(s) can be used as a State income tax deduction. What I did for the 4 years my oldest was in school was use the educational credits from my federal return and put them into the account, thus, receiving a state tax deduction mentioned earlier.

I'm not sure there is a penalty for using the money for things other than education but you would have to pay taxes on something originally exempt.

I’m 60% retired and the the other 40% works 2 t o3 days a week anyway, thanks to the Obama Presidency. Now if we get Dim Wit Don out of office we can keep moving forward rather than the Ups and Downs of Stupidity.
All that sounds nice but can you provide anything other than 'because I said so' to support it?

    fuck off.

I decided to give it to a relative or friend who needs it more than me.

I don't understand why those illegals who pay taxes are disqualified. They don't have a SSN but they file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Anyone who filed with an ITIN is disqualified from receiving a stimulus check.

If they pay taxes like the rest of us, they ought to receive a stimulus check like the rest of us.

I certainly hope that after Easter, when this is all over, you get to take your trip. And I especially hope it's a one way trip!

It is sad that the Repubs took so long to learn that it is money in the hands of people that spurs the economy. Only this time, the stores are closed. Its impact on jobs is questionable.

I'm having trouble deciding........should I donate it to Trump's campaign or to one of those agencies building the wall on our southern border....

choice#4 None of your dang business!
Abortion rights dogma can obscure human reason & harden the human heart so much that the same person who feels
empathy for animal suffering can lack compassion for unborn children who experience lethal violence and excruciating
    pain in abortion.

Unborn animals are protected in their nesting places, humans are not. To abort something is to end something
which has begun. To abort life is to end it.
