Lazarus v. Alighieri
This plaque is bolted to the wall inside the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal:
Emma Lazarus’ words do irreparable harm for all time.
This warning should be chiseled in cement above every entrance to the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate:
Dante’s words could save this country for all time.
The basic test of freedom is perhaps less in what we are free to do than in what we are free not to do. It is the freedom to refrain, withdraw and abstain which makes a totalitarian regime impossible. Eric Hoffer
