General Motors and Ventec Life Systems said Friday they have agreed to build critical-care ventilators at one of the automaker’s components plants in Indiana.

The deal, which includes FDA-cleared ventilators shipping as soon as next month, was announced shortly after President Donald Trump criticized the automaker and CEO Mary Barra for not moving quickly enough to produce life-saving ventilators wanting “top dollar” for doing so.

Trump suggested he would invoke the Defense Production Act to force the companies to produce needed equipment like ventilators.

No just more Trump lies, just like he said on March 21st, that GM was already producing ventilators. The man is sooooo fucked up, he doesn't know top from bottom.

I think most people will be pretty leery to take his word that it's safe to go to church by then, whether they are supporters or not. 9 out of 10 people are taking precautions seriously.

How is DT supposed to convince them it is suddenly any different or safer to gather in groups?

And what's DT think he can do? Over-ride all the local stay-at-home orders?
The Philadelphia 1918 scenario is already in play post-Mardi Gras and post-Spring Break.

Several years ago, after learning that the Empire State’s stockpile of medical equipment had 16,000 fewer ventilators than the 18,000 New Yorkers would need in a severe pandemic, state public-health leaders came to a fork in the road.

They could have chosen to buy more ventilators to back up the supplies hospitals maintain. Instead, the health commissioner, Howard Zucker, assembled a task force for rationing the ventilators they already had.

In 2015, that task force came up with rules that will be imposed when ventilators run short. Patients assigned a red code will have highest access, and other patients will be assigned green, yellow or blue (the worst), depending on a “triage officer’s” decision.

In 2015, the state could have purchased the additional 16,000 needed ventilators for $36,000 apiece, or a total of $576 million. It’s a lot of money, but in hindsight, spending half a percent of the budget to prepare for pandemic was the right thing to do.
They were also demanding more money, until Trump rained on their parade with the Defense Production Act.

    I don't get it.

Either we are going to need them, or they are going to be needed elsewhere on the planet.

Share the technology. Get cranking. The enemy is advancing. Time is not on our side. This must be DONE! It's the humans against the bugs and we are getting creamed so far.

Real Time Current Number Of Cases And Deaths With Graphs <- Check it out. We are NOT flattening the curve. This is the spike we DON'T want.

If worried about the money, there is going to be a market for them. Countries will pay big.

We can't have too many ventilators. This is about to be the number one commodity on the planet, if not already.

And while we are at it, there needs to be huge increase in classes to qualify respiratory therapists to run them.

Come on. This is war. Why are we stalling on this stuff?

Shoulda been ordered 6 weeks ago.

    SMH
pretty scary, guess we need totalitarianism.

You obviously do not know what is involved in making ventilators, especially in an auto plant. It is not the same work nor the same skill set that they use daily. There are many pieces they have to purchase or subcontract. Just subcontracting requires talking to vendors and determining who can produce the quantities they need at the prices they are willing to pay. They require drawings and training. to produce the stands and frames. And large companies move slowly with many signatures requires and many meetings.

Hopefully the technology can be shared from existing manufacturers to others for this emergency.

The tooling, the process, etc. This is no longer about making money. It is about saving lives. Of course people need to get paid. But foremost, this production needs to ramp up fast.
