Their healthcare system is teetering because so many of their doctors are sent abroad to make money for the Cuban government. They make around $12 billion a year from that. However their pharmaceutical industry is world class and they export to 51 countries. Not the US of course, even though the FDA has approved patents for 99 biotech products. Why you don't take them is beyond me as you could drastically lower the price of many drugs but no doubt politics, as always, plays a big part as does the cost of the approvals process.

The government could do two simple things that would drive down the cost of private insurance:

Force them to compete across state lines and open up the pharmaceutical market to outside competition and/or get their lobbyists out of DC.

Many drug prices are behind absurd.
