People assume groups will continue voting as they do now when history shows major changes over the years:
1. Males & females used to vote the same now women are much more Democratic than men
2. Blacks used to be loyal Republicans and now they are loyal Democrats
3. The South used to be one-party Democratic and now they are one-party Republican
4. The NE used to be Republican and now it is Democratic
5. White working class was a major part of the New Deal Coalition and now they vote Republican
6. Older voters used to vote Democratic and now white older voters are the most reliable Republicans

Generations and issues change. New generations react to new issues differently which might be different than their previous party affilation (although politics seems to be less about issues today than group loyalty and negative partisanship)

And look what happened. The Conservatives steadily became more liberal on social issue after social issue. At one point, they were fighting tooth and nail against gay marriage. Today they barely mention it because they know it would cost them elections. And it was the same with their stances on everything from women voting to Catholic immigration.
Don't get me wrong, the Republican Party will still be around. They'll just continue becoming liberal. If anything, Trump is yet another last ditch effort by the Right to turn back the clock, this time with extremely blatant Fascism. But if we can hold on to Democracy until the Boomers are dead, we'll be alright.
