Health officials in the United States warned Tuesday that the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country appears inevitable, marking a significant change in tone as global travel disruptions continued to worsen, South Korea neared 1,000 cases and Iran reported at least 15 deaths.

China and South Korea announced new cases of the coronavirus, raising concerns in both nations about how long it could take for normal life to return. South Korea confirmed 144 more cases, bringing its total to 977, the most outside China. President Moon Jae-in visited the city of Daegu, where more than half of the country’s confirmed cases have been found, Tuesday afternoon local time.

Travel disruptions continued to spread, with the United Arab Emirates, one of the world’s most critical aviation hubs, saying it would suspend all travel to and from Iran, where authorities confirmed that the death toll has reached at least 15. In Iran, an opposition lawmaker and the deputy health minister tested positive for the virus as the death toll there climbed.

Early Tuesday, global markets appeared to stabilize after Monday’s heavy losses — until the Dow Jones fell 600 points, wiping out a 150-point gain.

Here are the latest developments:

● The Chinese government said Tuesday that there had been 508 new confirmed cases by the end of the previous day, along with 74 deaths, bringing the total number of accumulated infections nationwide to 77,658, with 2,663 deaths.

●“Ultimately, we expect we will see community spread in the United States,” Nancy Messonnier, a top official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters. “It’s not a question of if this will happen but when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illnesses.”...

This illness has roughly the same R0 value and the same mortality/morbidity rate as that pandemic. The difference is 100 years ago we did not have antibiotics or the supportive care (like O2, ventilators, etc.) that we have now. It is secondary bacterial infections that cause most influenza/coronavirus deaths. From what I've read so far 80% of the deaths from COVID-19 are in the 60+ age group. The Spanish flu took them as well, but also the young and otherwise healthy.

I don't think that could happen. We have much more significant ways to identify and isolate. BUT my biggest concern, is the 'CAPITAL CLASS,' ours and the worlds, who won't ALLOW people and/goods to be blocked. Not harbors, ports, airports, highways, tunnels/chunnels or straight aways. They will not cancel contracts. Wait'll all the 'workarounds' or FLOUTING of law begins should this last any significant period of time (measured in MARKET terms, not disease terms).

(Maybe TRUMP can use THIS ONE as a reason to shut down the southern border. Of course I haven't heard of any cases in Baja or S. America yet. Details).

The Trump administration on Tuesday faced a new threat in the mounting coronavirus crisis: a big bipartisan backlash.
Administration officials tried to swat away concerns their emergency request for $2.5 billion to address the outbreak was not enough even as some Republicans joined Democrats in criticizing the amount — and a lack of transparency around efforts to contain the disease on U.S. soil.

The closed-door briefing with more than a dozen senators came amid new fears of an outbreak in the United States, with a top Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official warning that spread of the respiratory illness in the country is now inevitable. Officials said a burst of new cases in countries like South Korea and Italy prompted the new, urgent warning.








That news and the angst on Capitol Hill is threatening to overwhelm the messaging from President Donald Trump and some of his aides, who have been trying to downplay the situation in hopes they can put a lid on the stock market tumble and cable news coverage of mounting deaths around the world.
Trump's advisers and political allies are increasingly concerned that a botched response could hurt the U.S. economy and put his reelection prospects at risk. Public health and other administration officials fielded questions from more than a dozen senators for about an hour while HHS Secretary Alex Azar and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf faced sharp criticism at a pair of Senate budget hearings.

We should try to contain and eradicate this as much as we can, both in the U.S. and helping our friends all over the world.”At the homeland security budget hearing, Sen.
