Yeah, the panic is unproductive.

The mortality rate numbers vary from around 1% to 5% with the low number being more accurate because the high number comes out of China, where people aren’t being tested positive till the get really sick—typically with pneumonia. More people are dying in China because a lot more people catch it in China. A healthy person who gets it would very likely just develop flu like symptoms.

It’s no reason to shut down the subways or whatever. Maybe people who are susceptible to pneumonia, have COPD or etc should wear masks in public or stay away from public places till it passes. Everyone else just practice flu precautions. Wash your hands etc.
