It stops the one being executed from doing it again. It's a form of punishment. Whether it is a deterrent isn't up to the one carrying out the execution. The only one that can deter the action that results in an execution is the one taking the action.

When it comes to executing one of the POS, it should be done in the same manner he/she did it to their victim(s). You idiots that oppose the death penalty care more about how the criminal is treated than the victim(s).
