Trump is the first in history to be elected based on Russian propaganda.

He won because the Russians used a misinformation campaign to exploit the stupidity of conservatives and install the candidate that would be the most beneficial to them and detrimental to America.

And that is exactly what they got.

First, Bernie went there in 1988, which was well after the start of Glasnost. The Soviet Union was moving away from Communism and Authoritarianism.

Secondly, why is it that Bernie visiting the Soviet Union means he's a Communist, but Trump constantly praising dictators doesn't mean he's a Fascist? In one case, you have a guy simply visiting a country, in the other it's a guy saying he likes the way these Authoritarian countries are being run.
I've been to China, but I've never commended their dictators.

If this was the only example of Bernie discussing the merits of the Soviet Union and other regimes of the socialist spectrum, then I would agree with you. It's not.

I think he would without hesitation.

It is a serious mistake to equate Democratic Socialism with straight up socialism, and an even more egregious one to equate socialism with communism. Any view which gets either of these wrong is wrong. And if it gets both of them wrong it is doubly wrong.

On the latter comparison, I would agree that there are differences that are worth discussing.

On the former comparison, the differences are relatively minor.

Nobody young who is supporter cares about the label.

Older people who have been told their whole lives that socialism is horrible and you lose your freedom and get told what to do like communism, those people are afraid of Bernie because they believe all those old myths about socialism. And Bernie has been very clear to distinguish himself from the old myth by calling his platform one of 'Democratic Socialism.' I totally agree with it. He is on the right track. It all makes sense to me.

But it doesn't make sense to the mushy middle. They are afraid of the S-word. Bernie's opponents are not going to give him the respect of granting him his own version of it. They have to turn it into a straw man they can more easily tear to pieces. They are going to drop the 'Democratic' part and just call him a socialist. 'A self-avowed socialist,' (as if he is insane to admit it.) Fear is a great motivator. In their view, you are asking them to elect Karl Marx.

Bernie's challenge is to motivate enough young people to overcome the hateful fearful older ones. That's a pretty big challenge, too. Nobody has ever gotten elected president by motivating the young to come out in sufficient enough numbers to overwhelm the old. Old people are more motivated to vote. They are wiser. They have had a whole lifetime to learn and observe. They see the bigger picture. They are familiar with lots of things the young have not seen. They are far more reliable voters. Bernie has a big uphill battle ahead of him. And he can pretty much count on not getting any super delegates. He will have to win the primaries by a huge margin, enough so that no other candidate could be put over his count if they have all the super delegates. That's probably the only way Bernie is getting in.

The rightwing only care about the word socialism if they can weaponize it against liberals.

Conservatives do not actually genuinely give a rats ass about the humans who actually lived under totalitarian systems, whether it was the USSR, or whether it is Saudi Arabia.

Unlike conservatives, I have a body of posts here which are a genuine, articulate, and compelling. denunciation of the moral and ethical dimensions of totalitarian communism. And some of us have both the honesty and cognition to draw distinctions between totalitarian communism, democratic socialism, and liberal welfare states.

Bernie did a very ignorant thing on Twitter, he’s biting the very hands he needs to win an election, those he calls establishment Democrats. I always wonder why he runs as a Democrat if he hates the party, absolutely makes no sense to me.
