Putin is happy when the USA is bitterly divided.

When people won't listen to one another, and they get all angry if somebody else states an opposing view, and call that person nasty things, and it doesn't solve anything, and some go to the streets and protest, and others even resort to violence, that makes Putin happy.

The reason Putin likes it when the USA is having these problems, is because then he can say to his people: "Aren't you glad you're a Russian?"

That last thing he would want would be for America to work through it's problems and learn how more effectively discuss issues, and reach more agreement on what to do about things, possible compromises so each side gets something. Basically, if America is successful. That makes Putin look bad, because Russia is so corrupt. As long as he can keep the rest of the world looking worse than Russia, he can maintain his power.

Putin's goal is to mess up as many other countries as possible, any way he can.
