It's funny, there was an article in yesterday's paper about a proposed development in Berkeley and in it it states liberals in Berkeley view developers with suspicion. I laughed out loud. We have a severe housing crisis and people who build new product are the bad guys?
California and Texas get compared a lot. You'll notice in Texas they are very development friendly and as a result to cost of housing (and living) is far cheaper. In California we put severe restrictions and cost restraints on development and thus the cost of housing is astronomical because we don't meet the demand.
And my favorite are the cries of racism. The places where housing costs the most are the most liberal, the Bay Area and L.A. And that's where you'll find the biggest NIMBY's. Yet who is the largest number of home owners? It's older people and older people who are white. Now it's not to say there aren't conservative NIMBY's because there are but around here they are scare in number. So it's completely ironic that the racism preventing new housing is coming from (older) white progressives.

I grew up in Boston MA and it was the exact same situation. In my town, a bedroom suburb, I saw exactly one house constructed in the 18 years that I lived there. My parents bought their house in 1964 for $30,000, and sold it 18 years later for $340,000. I just checked the current tax value- it's over $1,600,000.
Who the fuck can afford that? Not me.
The solution though, is easy. I just moved far, far away. The house I bought in NC is larger, 65 years newer, and in a nicer neighborhood. Not to mention less than 1/3 the cost.
You just described exactly why so many people leave California for other areas. Unless you have family or tech money most people can't afford $1.5 million homes. Even a couple each making $100K can't afford it. Now if you bought in the '70's or '80's you're sitting on a gold mine today. And those are the folks who really fight against new development. On one hand its understandable. You like your neighborhood as it is and don't want to see it changed. But it makes it unaffordable for everyone else.
California isn't the only place this happens but it's the strongest here. People complain about inequality (and racism) yet push these anti-development policies which exacerbate the problem.
