It's twofold. The jobs are really in the urban areas so that's where housing needs to be focused. Otherwise you end up like LA with its horrific sprawl. But people fight higher density in the urban areas and we restrict a large amount of open area where housing can be built. So it's a double whammy.

Are you in Montgomery County by chance? I know a guy who is a councilmember there.

Now there is zero question California has had an anti-growth attitude towards housing for decades which is why we have the crisis we do. From a federalist perspective should the federal government force California to build more housing is essentially what it comes down too.
Yes... I see plenty of available acreage in Beverly Hills. Just got to build apartment complexes next to some of those mansions.

Richest county in America last time I checked. Liberal, of course. I'm fairly close at the edge of SW Baltimore County.

Admittedly I know little about the area but I'm connected with him on Facebook so I read what he posts and what gets discussed and yes, it does not seem like an area with a large number of Republicans.

Totally lib; it feeds off of DC money.

Of course it is a complex issue, and my questions are probably stupid. But wouldn't the "jobs/buisinesses" naturally migrate to other locations where they can find workers? ... or the corporations are simply forced to pay hire wages so it's workers so they can afford the expensive housing?

Why do you call LA's sprawl horrific?

Totally logical and legitimate questions and not that I'm some expert but I'll attempt to answer. We are seeing many companies/jobs leave the high cost coastal areas for more affordable ones. But even with that most people around the world know if you want to be in tech the Bay Area/Silicon Valley is the place to be, as is LA for entertainment and NY for finance and as a result those areas will continue to be desirable. The problem when you don't build sufficient housing is the areas become most rich or poor with little in the middle which isn't good. And it makes it harder for young people to go to these areas which holds down economic growth for the country.

Businesses do pay higher wages in coastal cities. But ultimately its not their fault that the government prevents development and forces the cost of living skyward. For example we could make the local minimum wage between $20 - $30/hr and people still couldn't afford to live here. That's how out of whack it is.

LA never built density. They just kept building outwards. LA freeways (or in reality they are parking lots much of the time) are the worst. It takes forever to get anywhere and to top it off they have sh*tty public transportation so everyone drives.

California and Texas get compared a lot. You'll notice in Texas they are very development friendly and as a result to cost of housing (and living) is far cheaper. In California we put severe restrictions and cost restraints on development and thus the cost of housing is astronomical because we don't meet the demand.

And my favorite are the cries of racism. The places where housing costs the most are the most liberal, the Bay Area and L.A. And that's where you'll find the biggest NIMBY's. Yet who is the largest number of home owners? It's older people and older people who are white. Now it's not to say there aren't conservative NIMBY's because there are but around here they are scare in number. So it's completely ironic that the racism preventing new housing is coming from (older) white progressives.
You should be deported to texas. & let them all know you are from SF.........

Texas is a shithole state, damn good reason things are cheap.....

Other that Austin & El Paso & maybe San Antonio I wouldn't wanna live there.....

    FUCKING URBAN SPRAWL........... dallass, houston

Admittedly I've never been but I believe if you look up sh*thole in the dictionary you will find El Paso.

I lived in Dallas as a kid. My in-laws live in DFW so I spend time there. Is Dallas sprawl any different than L.A.'s?

This is a long read but good insight into why we have the housing crisis we do:

Who are the Bay Area’s NIMBYs—and what do they want?

Anti-development groups, which have largely flown under San Francisco’s political radar, have won elections, secured appointments, and halted high-density developments

I heard some clips of Pneusome addressing Sacramento about the problem of homelessness and housing. Absolutely painful stuff.
