No question mental illness and drug issues play a huge role in homelessness. If you're a drug addict that has no control over your life rent being $1K vs. $3K isn't going to make a difference.

I could go find the articles/studies that show this but the extraordinarily costs of living in the major markets where jobs are has a negative effect on economic growth in this country. So while its hard to really care about problems in an area where you don't live it ultimately has an effect on all of us.
The problem with being a thinking being, is we can rationalize anything. :-)

But I don't doubt that you could find articles linking the two.

No matter how may ways I look at the issue, I can't help but come down on the side of the home owners, in the end.

Bottomline, it is a truism that homeowners care about their neighborhood, renters don't give a shit. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule.

I own my condo and have investment property so I am definitely not anti-home ownership. But the focus on making housing more expensive to benefit existing home owners makes for a less dynamic economy overall and hurts the young and working class people by putting ownership (and cost of renting) out of reach for them. And when you see the studies and data its not being done by groups with an agenda its just what the data shows.

Depending on your age the opportunity to purchase property in this country was far greater and more affordable decades ago compared to today. Again, that's not good. Not everyone has to be a homeowner but we all have to live somewhere and in many places we've driven up pricing to a degree that is an overall detriment.

I remember when mortgages were 18-21% in the 1970's. It wasn't very affordable for anyone :0)

Those existing home owners were smart investors. Apparently, a lot smarter than the corps who could have snatched up those properties cheap, 30 years ago.

People simply are willing to pay more for prime real estate. That is a natural law.

Ahh, the Carter years. Wasn't he a great president lol?

It took a long time to recover from that disaster. I bought my first house in '87 and the interest rate was "only" 10.75%. And that was an ARM.

Funny thing about ARMs; they only adjust upwards.
