Majority of Americans say Trump and GOP responsible for the economy



Nearly twice as many registered voters said they thought President Trump was responsible for the current state of the economy compared to those who credited former President Obama, according to a new American Barometer survey.

The poll, conducted by Hill.TV and the HarrisX polling company, found that 49 percent of respondents attributed today's economy to Trump, while 24 percent of respondents credited Obama.

Twelve percent of respondents said Republicans in Congress were responsible, while eight percent credited congressional Democrats.

The American Barometer also found that 43 percent of registered voters said they would describe the economy as "good."

The poll comes nearly a week after unemployment reached a 49-year-low in the U.S. for the month of September.

Americans' Positive Views on the Economy Could Earn Trump a Boost in 2020, New Poll Suggests


More than three quarters of Americans rate the economy favorably—the most since 2001, according to a poll by CNN.

The data also indicated that the Democratic presidential candidates seem to have slipped in popularity. In recent hypothetical matchups against U.S. President Donald Trump, fewer respondents chose Democrats than they did in previous CNN polls.

Presidential elections can be viewed as a referendum on the economy, but partisans are also less likely to give members of the other party credit where credit is due, according to analysis by The Cook Political Report. That holds in the CNN survey, as nearly all Republicans said economic conditions were good, compared to 62 percent of Democrats.

The survey, conducted over December 12-15 among 1,005 people, came just after reports that China and the U.S. could be nearing a trade deal after more than a year of tit-for-tat tariffs that have plagued the global economy. The survey period also took place shortly after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi voiced rare bipartisan support for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), calling it a "victory for America's workers."

CNN found that most poll respondents (71 percent) approved of USMCA and viewed foreign trade as an opportunity for economic growth.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sixty-one percent of Americans say they are better off than they were three years ago, a higher percentage than in prior election years when an incumbent president was running. In the 1992, 1996 and 2004 election cycles, exactly half said they were better off. In three separate measures during the 2012 election cycle, an average of 45% said they were better off.

~ The current results, from a Jan. 16-29 Gallup poll, echo record highs, measured earlier in January, in Americans' satisfaction with the way things are going in their personal life and in their assessments of their personal finances.

Relatedly, 52% of U.S. adults say it is easier for them to "go and buy things in the stores" than it was three years ago, higher than in the 1992, 1996 and 2004 election cycles, when the figures were closer to 40%.
