Sinn Féin’s success makes the breakup of the UK more likely

The unification issue became dormant after the Belfast/Good Friday agreement ended the Troubles in 1998. The agreement acknowledged Northern Ireland as part of the UK; but it provides for future unification if majorities in both parts of Ireland agree. The 2016 Brexit vote reawakened the possibility. It threatened to create a new land border between the UK and the EU in Ireland. Boris Johnson’s withdrawal agreement with the EU then removed that. Instead, it placed much of Northern Ireland’s economy under EU rules, with a border now planned in the Irish Sea.

In the republic’s election exit poll last weekend, 57% backed new unification referendums in the two jurisdictions. That may seem quite modest and cautious. But if Sinn Féin is in government, it is likely to set in motion a process towards an eventual unification vote. If it is in opposition, it will pressure a necessarily weak government into doing the same. One way or another, a unification poll is now likely to receive more support in Dublin than it has in recent decades. That is an important change. The former taoiseach Bertie Ahern, the ultimate pragmatist, is surely right to suggest that a vote is now inevitable in about five years or more.

For most of the century since Ireland gained independence from Britain, control of the country has alternated between two parties. On February 8th that duopoly was smashed apart, when Sinn Fein got the largest share of first-preference votes in the republic’s general election. The party, with links to the Irish Republican Army (ira), which bombed and shot its way through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, won with a left-wing platform that included promises to spend more on health and housing. Yet it did not hide its desire for something a lot more ambitious. “Our core political objective”, its manifesto read, “is to achieve Irish Unity and the referendum on Unity which is the means to secure this.”

The peace treaty has been broken. Johnson needs the support of the Unionists, so he cannot compromise with the other side. The only thing preventing open war is the Catholics think they can get their way without fighting.

One way or another, a unification poll is now likely to receive more support in Dublin than it has in recent decades.

Never mind Dublin, what about Belfast? There is still a Unionist majority in NI, and it won't be easy to persuade those folks that they should join the Irish Republic. Especially if it's run by Sinn Fein.

A viral video of David Cullinane, a Sinn Fein MP, concluding his victory speech with shouts of "Up the IRA, our day will come!" angered new Sinn Fein voters. "This is disgraceful, I did not vote for this" and "I loaned Sinn Fein my vote for this election. Never again" were among the posts in an online backlash.

According to an extensive exit poll, health, housing, pensions, and to a lesser extent the economy and Brexit were the factors that swayed voting intentions. A united Ireland was cited by less than 1% of voters.
